Traversing Probe Systems That Fit Your Site Conditions
Getting a clear picture of subsurface conditions often boils down to having the right tools in the borehole. When standard spot measurements aren't enough, traversing probe systems step in to deliver continuous profiles of parameters like inclination, temperature, or pore pressure. At Kingmach, we've seen how project requirements can vary—some sites need a slim probe to navigate tight casings, others want multi-sensor arrays for long-term monitoring. That's why our approach to these systems isn't one-size-fits-all. We work with engineering firms and monitoring contractors to configure probe strings, cable management, and data acquisition setups that match the actual job, not just a catalog listing.
Technical Detail
The traversing probe systems we offer are built around a modular concept—meaning you can select from a range of sensor types and string them together in a single array. This avoids the hassle of running multiple separate tools and reduces field time. Common sensors include MEMS-based inclinometers, vibrating wire piezometers, and thermistor strings, but the real advantage is in how they’re integrated. Surface readout units and data loggers can be spec’d to handle both manual spot checks and automated, periodic logging. Since we manufacture most of the individual sensor components ourselves, customization doesn't come with the same lead time or cost premium you might expect from a reseller. We've handled projects that required, say, a 24-sensor string inside a 50 mm borehole with pressure-resistant connectors, and could adapt the design based on site reports. After installation, our technical team can assist with calibration checks and data interpretation remotely, which cuts down on travel costs for sites in remote locations.

FAQ
Typically, these systems are configured for inclinometer profiling, pore pressure monitoring, and temperature logging. But because the probe segments are modular, we can build arrays that combine two or three of these parameters in one string. If you need something less common—like a specific gas sensor or a custom diameter—we can assess feasibility based on your technical requirements.
Installation follows standard borehole practice: the probe string is lowered into a casing or standpipe, and cables are routed to a surface logger. We don't normally send our own field crews, but we provide detailed manuals, training sessions, and remote support during critical phases. In some regions, our distributors offer supervised installation.
Most readouts can export CSV or MODBUS data that works with common data management platforms. We do offer a simple PC application for real-time curve viewing and basic analysis, but you're not locked into it. If your team uses a specific SCADA or AMI system, we can confirm compatibility or suggest interface modules.
Upfront, a multi-parameter traversing probe is more expensive than a handful of standalone sensors. But when you factor in the time saved from not having to mobilise multiple tools, plus the value of continuous data for detecting anomalies, many clients find the payback is within a few monitoring campaigns. We can quote a system without pushing you toward features you don't need.
